Menopause Brain Fog is it Real?

Understanding how perimenopause and the menopause affect your memory and ability to concentrate.

You've probably noticed that it's become more difficult to concentrate or remember the names of the little things in daily life.

If like me you have kids that are too old to call it "Baby Brain" then you will be experiencing "Brain Fog"!

First things first - menopause "Brain Fog" is real! If you're a woman over forty, you've probably noticed that you can't recall the name of "that actress" in "that movie" in conversation, even though she's your favourite actress and you just saw the movie yet again last week. The name of simple kitchen appliances when you're trying to tell your kids to load the dishwasher or washing machine. How many of you, if in doubt when you've lost something always check the fridge? You may feel stupid when you have to stop and search for a word in the middle of a sentence over dinner and drinks with the girls.  It's okay. In fact, it's normal and you can do something about it.

What is Menopause Brain Fog?

Perimenopause is the time in your life when you hormone levels start to decline, usually when you're in your mid-to late forties, however it can happen in your late 30's. A variety of symptoms; Hot flashes, weight gain and brain fog start to show up as your body produces less oestrogen, progesterone and the related female hormones.

Once you officially enter menopause many of the symptoms are alleviated.  The "Brain Fog" though? This one can stick around.

Sixty percent of women experience cognition issues, like short-term memory loss or fuzzy thinking.  I some cases, it can be so severe, it causes concerns about dementia and Alzheimer's disease, especially if like myself you are aware of a family history.  And those concerns are valid, since MRIs reveal increasing brain deterioration in women after menopause.  In fact, during the transition between perimenopause and menopause, women's brain work 20-25% less efficiently.

Should You Worry About Menopause Brain Fog?

Brain fog is a common physical symptom. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to improve your memory and ability to think clearly - both now and into the future.

I'd suggest you do your best to stop worrying, "easier said than done you say". Take this new symptom in your stride, and get proactive about your brain health.  With your sense of humour, and support from your female friends, believe me you won't be the only one who has forgotten their partners name when introducing them to a colleague, or only last week the lady who parked her car in town, only to walk home and report her car stolen because it wasn't on the driveway, No! I've not made that one up the lady also reported it on our local town Facebook Group.

Fortunately neither of these were my own experiences although I had on several occasions forgotten which end of the High Street I had parked the car. I did however forget how to drive after blocking a parking space in the school carpark, taking at least 5 minutes to breath before working out the order in which I had to do everything before moving.

I would like to think these are all things you can relate to. You can most likely minimise menopause brain fog and get your cognitive abilities back on track with a little help from Mother Nature.

Natural Treatments for Menopause Brain Fog

How can you address brain fog with natural treatments? There are several things you can start doing immediately to help support brain health and increase the flow of oxygen and supportive nutrients to your brain. Here are just a few suggestions.

Aerobic Exercise: Research shows that yesterday's 60 minute cycling session or three-mile walk probably triggered your brain to grow new nerve cells, create new blood vessels, repair existing cells and grow new ones.  Aerobic activity also increases the flow of fresh blood and oxygen to your brain.

Stress Reduction: According to research, stress is damaging to your brain. Studies show that the hormone cortisol, which your body creates in response to high-stress situations or events, actually damages the brain tissue that's responsible for memory and learning.

Fortunately, simply recognising when you're feeling stressed gives you the chance to take a few deep breaths to reduce it.  You can also take up a meditation practice, I've found since I attend a bi-weekly pilates class and a couple of aerobic exercise sessions they make such a difference.  All a proven stress reducers that aren't difficult to incorporate into your schedule, it even easier if you arrange to go with friends.

Drink Up: Dehydration isn't kind to your body or your brain. When you don't consume enough water, toxins can build up and you brain can actually shrink in size. Not getting enough fluids can cause headaches and lightheadedness. Set a goal of drinking at least large glasses of plain water a day.

Give Your Brain Necessary Nutrients: Your brain thrives when it receives the fat-based nutrients it needs, specifically Omega-3 fatty acids along with antioxidants and carotenoids (plant-based nutrients found in leafy greens like broccoli, spinach and kale). Focus on eating a varied diet made up primarily of fruits, vegetable, high-fat fish, lean protein in the form of chicken, and nuts, while avoiding  processed foods, sugar and alcohol. To ensure your brain receives all the necessary nutrients required for optimal health, consider fortifying your diet with supplements that promote cognitive function.
