Supplementing with Zinc

What is Zinc?

Many people turn to zinc supplements when they start feeling under the weather and for good reason.

Not only is zinc one of the most abundant trace minerals in your body, but it also plays a key role in nearly every aspect of health.  For example, zinc is required as a cofactor for more than 300 different enzymes meaning it is needed for their proper functioning.

Plus, with research showing that this mineral may enhance immune function, stabilise blood sugar levels, and support skin, eyes, and heart health. there are plenty of reasons to ensure you get your daily dose.

Study of Zinc and Sources:

Recent evidence suggest that zinc is involved in the regulation of sleep.  A study of 890 healthy individuals found that those having the optimum hours of sleep per night (seven to nigh hours) had the highest levels of zinc in their blood.

Oysters are the best source of Zinc from foods; however red meat, poultry and other seafoods, such as crab and lobster are also good sources. Vegetarian sources include beans, nuts and whole grains.

Zinc Deficiency

Though zinc deficiency is uncommon, the mineral is considered an essential nutrient, meaning that your body is unable to produce it on its own.  People with restrictive diets, impaired nutrient absorption, or some health conditions may be more susceptible.
